There is well known problem that AOL/AIM mail users wont be able activate forum account. This is caused by spam-protection policy at AOL 
I recommend you to change spam-filter settings(if possible) and re-request activation mail
(check out your spam/junk box as well)
If it didnt helped, then use different mail provider for forum.
(i guess this is the simple solution).

Also it could be other settings, AOL has stupid age rankings and if you are a kid or something maybe it blocks the spam automatically. I'm on a high setting so it doesn't matter for me, just a thought though
